What an incredible weekend! Friday night we had a nourishing potluck dinner to prepare the long course participants for what would prove to be a hot, dry, challenging day. They did well despite 90 degrees on the hilly half marathon – though around the camp later that night their reflections were grim about their own performances on a tough course – as is the case with athletes. During the last weeks of training for Ironman 70.3 Oceanside I tried to fix the things I did have control over: adding fluids to the bike, figuring out what to eat, swim socks, resting. I didn’t workout this last week. I took the bike in to the shop on Monday and didn’t see her again until Thursday when I returned from packet pick-up. Instead I went to a few yoga classes and practiced stretching deeply and clearing my head.

My brother, a center on his college football team and probably where he heard it first, asks this question of his own kids when they come limping off the field or into the house. It's a good question. In football, if you are injured you cannot go back in the game; but if you are just hurt then you can pull it together and get back out there.
